Introduction to the SWEBOKMichael A. Ulm, CSDP |
An important part of establishing
software engineering as a profession is having a recognized body of
knowledge. This body of knowledge can
then serve as the basis for, among other things, curriculum development, continuing
education, certification and, perhaps one day, licensing. Therefore, the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE
CS) commissioned the writing of the "Guide to the Software Engineering
Body of Knowledge" (SWEBOK). Having been extensively reviewed by industry
and academic experts, this document is now its second major version
("Stone Man") and is publicly available through the SWEBOK web site, http://www.swebok.org.
This presentation will cover
the intent and history of the SWEBOK.
Its overall structure will then be explained. A cursory overview of its content will be provided. Finally, the presentation will comment on
the relationship between the SWEBOK and the IEEE CS Certified Software
Development Professional (CSDP) exam.
Michael A. Ulm, CSDP (MAUlm@juno.com)
Mike is currently a quality engineer,
focusing on software process improvements.
With over ten years in industry, he has wide range of experience:
employee number one in a start up, a contract programmer, a developer in a
large Internet provider, and a development manager in a large
telecommunications company (with whom he still employed).
In 2002, Mike became one of the earliest
IEEE Computer Society Certified Software Development Professionals (CSDP). He
holds an M.S. in Computer Science and a B.S. in Mathematics, both from the Ohio
State University. He is currently working on a Masters in Engineering
Management at Northwestern University. He is a member of the IEEE Computer
